Good News from Living Waters Feeding Center!

“Like cold water to a weary soul, so is good news from a distant land.”  Proverbs 25:25

Far away, in the little village of Kaswanga, Kenya, 100 orphans are cared for at the Living Waters Intl Feeding Center.  They come to the feeding center for daily meals, medical care and school uniforms which allow them to attend school.  But this year everything changed and we are filled with thankfulness at the way God has blessed the children at Living Waters during this time of incredible challenges!  We want to say thank you to each one of you who helped to sustain the feeding of over 100 children in Kenya this year, likely saving them from  starvation.

  • The children did not go hungry. In March the Feeding Center had to stop serving meals to the the children. Instead we were able to give beans and maize to the children and their guardians to take home.  This gave our orphans and their families food to eat!
  • The children are healthy.  The local clinic where the children go to receive care when they have malaria or injuries became a Covid-19 ward and there was no medical care available to our children. Miraculously, not one of our children has needed medical care during this time!
  • The children have grown spiritually.  The schools have been closed since March. Churches were also closed for a time.  The churches were allowed to reopen recently and we received the happy news that three of our Living Waters girls chose to be baptized.  They are pictured below on their baptism day:
  • School is reopening January 4!  In Kenya, the schools have been closed since the start of the pandemic and 2020 is now considered a “lost year” for most school children.  In January the children will go back to school and pick up their studies again.  With schools reopening, the Feeding Center will be able to resume serving daily meals to the children once again!
  • The children have grown physically!  The children have benefited from having food to eat and have grown taller.  This means that we will now need 100 new school uniforms.  This is a good thing and we will certainly need your help to accomplish this. The new uniforms will cost $5,000 and this has not been in the budget as all our resources were used to feed the children.  If you can make a special donation just mark your donation for uniforms.
  • We sincerely thank each one of you who have helped us to make it through this year. We believe that God led us to begin this program after our first trip to Kenya in 2005.  We are thankful that feeding children has been our focus so that we were able to provide the one thing that was most needed in 2020: food.
  • We don’t know what 2021 will bring, but we trust God will direct us and provide what is needed just as he has done this year.

News Update: June 4, 2020

“Some days we get 2 meals, some days we get one meal, and other days we just drink water and call it a day”.  Brian’s words alarmed me as I realized that many children in Kenya are going to bed hungry

The Living Waters Intl Feeding Program has stepped up to meet the increasing need for food during the covid-19 pandemic.  The Kenya government issued stay at home orders on March 15.  Large gatherings were banned and the orphan children can no longer come to receive their breakfast and lunch at the Feeding Center.

Orphan children are often the “low man on the totem pole” in the home.  In the best of times, the guardians simply don’t have the resources to feed and care for them.  These are not the best of times.  The economy is effectively locked down as people are not able to move around to get money or food.  Recent rains and flooding have washed out many of the families’ farms and even homes, making their lives even more desperate. And the plague of locusts is threatening to destroy any remaining crops.  Orphans lives are more difficult than ever.

The Living Waters Intl feeding program exists to provide food, medical care and school uniforms to orphan children.  Living Waters has jumped into action to respond to the Covid-19 restrictions.  Twice a month the boys and girls come with their guardians to the feeding center and receive beans and maize to prepare at home.  An extra donation this month allowed us to increase the amount of food given last week.  This is a desperate situation.  I need your help today to continue to feed the children.

In February we had no idea how fast things would be changing in the entire world.  With our friends, the Porter family, we accomplished a lot.  Paige led a class on feminine hygiene for the girls, giving them answers to their questions and handmade hygiene kits. The girls’ latrine building and 3 hand washing stations were completed.  We could not know how vital hygiene would become in a few short weeks!

300 banana trees were planted at the farm and improvements made to the road. Sweet potatoes, tomatoes and greens are thriving.  We did not know then how much the farm produce would be needed now.

The birthday party day was filled with games, singing, stories, and a special lunch.   We have never seen the children so happy.  Caleb Porter presented a blanket and sleeping mat to each child.  The children are warm and sleeping off the bare ground at night.  May God preserve the lives of each one!

Food Distribution
Grateful family enjoying a meal at home

Dear Friends,

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic,  the Living Waters feeding center has temporarily transitioned to a food distribution center.  The government of Kenya has banned all gatherings so we are not able to prepare and serve meals at this time.  The children are coming by appointment to the feeding center to get their sacks filled with beans and maize to take home.  We need your help to continue providing food for the Living Waters boys and girls.

News Update: (Sept, 19, 2019)

Alex, a fatherless six year old remembers the day he watched his mother die. Nobody ever told him what he should do when his world started to crumble around him. What will I eat or where will I live? How will I go to school? Who will love and care for me? What will happen to me?

This is what happens to 700 children a day in Kenya where there are over 3 million orphans in the country. I have seen the child headed homes where the oldest orphan sibling tries to care for the younger children. Relatives are reluctant to take the orphans into their homes because they are unable to feed an extra child. They need your help.

These boys and girls are vulnerable to exploitation and are stigmatized. Without at least one meal a day, they cannot think well enough to attend school.

Living Waters Intl is turning this around for the boys and girls on Rusinga Island, Kenya. Since 2008 Living Waters has cared for hundreds of orphaned children with 2 meals a day, school uniforms and medical care, allowing them to go to school. As the children’s basic needs are met, they learn to trust Jesus and the tide of hopelessness gives way to a bright future. I need your help.

Today, thanks to you, the children at the Living Waters Intl feeding program no longer live in child headed homes. Their neighbors and relatives have taken them in because they receive their meals at the Living Waters Intl Feeding Center.

And now the children who come to the feeding program are scoring well enough on their exams to go on to secondary school and university.

You have helped us to change the lives of hundreds of orphaned boys and girls and I want to thank you. Children like Brian and Hillary, two of seven orphaned brothers, once desperately trying to survive, are now attending university and working at the Living Waters Farm to earn money for school.

And Lorine, now a secondary school teacher says, “The feeding center kept me close to God because it was near the church and I was inspired by the bible verses read to us every day at lunch. The meals were always ready which helped me to fully concentrate on my studies and I had no worry about what I would eat while I was at the feeding center and this helped me to do well in school. Any time I was sick they cared for me. My time at the feeding center made me realize that I can help other needy children the way I was helped.”

Please help us continue changing children’s lives.

The Living Waters Farm, just three years old, is now harvesting hundreds of bushels of tomatoes, greens, watermelon, orange sweet potatoes, bananas and other crops, providing jobs in the community and fresh fruits and vegetables to the feeding program and the local people.

One of the big successes is the planting and harvesting of orange sweet potatoes. These nutritious vegetables are helping our orphans by boosting their immune systems so they are not getting sick so frequently, and have reduced the costs of medical care.
